HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR MY PIANO?
Jamie suggests you have your piano, as much as possible, against an interior wall in a room that stays at an even temperature. Pianos should be out of direct sunlight or they will warm and cool excessively and the finish may damage. Avoid locating your piano near heaters, under and over heating/cooling vents and air conditioners otherwise your piano will suffer badly. If avoiding a heating/cooling vent is too difficult, try directing the vent away from the piano (or shut the vent off entirely (perhaps place a mat or carpet square over it) so the air comes from another duct in the same room).
KNICK-KNACKS, DRINKS AND VASES
Keep objects off your piano that may scratch but particularly flower vases, plant pots, coffee and tea cups etc. Liquid spilled into the piano can be devastating.
Jamie recommends dusting your piano with a filament or feather duster to avoid scratches, or wipe over with a soft cloth. Never use liquid cleaning products. Leave the insides of the piano for the technician to clean.
A clean, dry, soft, microfibre cloth is very effective at removing fingerprints and smudges from shiny black polyester and nitrocellulose finishes (be sure the cloth is free of grit). Many manufacturers recommend against polishes as they can be damaging. Cleaning solutions are definitely not advised! Ask Jamie about what is appropriate.
